Symbolism in Cross-Shapes
Some people say, “Just because the Pier looks like a cross doesn’t mean that’s the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association’s (OGCMA) intent.” All evidence indicates the OGCMA’s intent in building the cross-shape pier is 100% religious intent.
Some people say, “You won’t see the cross at ground level.”
The cross-shape pier will be seen by air, from end-to-end in Ocean Grove, up-and-down the Shore, and from the 2nd floor and up of buildings.
Just because the symbol can’t be seen from all vantage points doesn’t lessen its intended effect, nor does it negate the fact that the symbol was put there with specific intent and purpose.
Many churches, cathedrals, and basilica are designed in the shape of a cross, even though they are mostly seen at ground-level.
The OGCMA stated to a small group of OGHOA Trustees, at a June 28, 2021 Township Committee meeting that, “The Pier will be in the shape of a cross.” This and promotional materials prove the obvious: it’s a cross-shape pier.
This quote from the OGCMA imposes its viewpoint on a public-use pier towards all types of religious and non-religious people. That’s not what the Framers of the Constitution had in mind:
“. . . the shape of the pier can serve to remind people of the love and forgiveness God has for all people.”
